Website SEO in 2025: The Technical and On-Page Fixes That Actually Move Rankings

Your website could be ranking on page one of Google and still failing to convert visitors into customers. A slow website with poor mobile experience and no clear calls to action will burn through organic traffic without producing a single lead. This guide covers the technical and structural improvements that will improve both your rankings and your conversion rate at the same time.

Why website speed is a ranking factor

Google uses Core Web Vitals as a direct ranking signal. Core Web Vitals measure how fast your largest content element loads (LCP), how quickly your page responds to user interaction (INP), and how much the layout shifts as the page loads (CLS). Poor scores do not just hurt your user experience — they actively suppress your rankings in both mobile and desktop search results.

The scores Google considers good are: LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds, and CLS under 0.1. Most small business websites score needs improvement or poor on at least one of these. Fixing them can produce measurable ranking improvements within weeks of Google recrawling your pages.

The five most common technical SEO problems on small business websites

1. No HTTPS

Google has used HTTPS as a ranking signal since 2014. If your website is still on HTTP, fix this first. Your hosting provider can install a free SSL certificate using Let's Encrypt. After installing it, make sure all HTTP URLs redirect to HTTPS and update your Google Search Console property.

2. Missing title tags and meta descriptions

Every page on your website needs a unique title tag and meta description. The title tag tells Google what the page is about and appears as the clickable headline in search results. Pages without title tags get assigned whatever Google decides to pull, which is almost never better than what you would write yourself.

3. Duplicate content

Duplicate content occurs when the same or very similar content appears on multiple URLs. This is common when WordPress generates both example.com/page and example.com/page/ as separate URLs. Use canonical tags to tell Google which version of each page is the primary one, and make sure your SEO plugin handles this automatically.

4. Unoptimised images

Unoptimised images are the most common cause of slow page loads. A photo uploaded straight from a phone is typically between 3MB and 8MB. The same image resized and compressed to WebP format should be under 100KB with no visible loss in quality. A plugin like ShortPixel or Imagify will handle this automatically for every image on your site.

5. No internal linking strategy

Internal links pass authority between pages and help Google understand the structure of your website. Most small business websites have weak internal linking. Every page should link to related pages using descriptive anchor text. A blog post about local SEO should link to your GBP service page. A service page should link to relevant blog content.

On-page SEO: what actually moves rankings in 2025

Target one keyword per page

Every page should target a single primary keyword and a small cluster of related terms. Trying to rank one page for ten different keywords splits your focus and confuses Google. Use your primary keyword in the title tag, the H1, the first 100 words, and naturally throughout the content.

Match search intent

Search intent is the reason behind a query. Someone searching "what is local SEO" wants an explanation. Someone searching "local SEO agency London" wants to hire someone. Your page needs to match the dominant intent for your target keyword. Check the top 10 results for your keyword and note what type of content Google is rewarding before you write a word.

Write for people, structure for Google

Good SEO content is not keyword-stuffed paragraphs written to game an algorithm. It is clear, useful, specific content that answers the searcher's question better than any competing page. Use clear headings to structure your argument, cover the topic thoroughly, and include specific details that demonstrate real expertise.

The six improvements with the biggest SEO impact

  1. Fix Core Web Vitals — run your site through PageSpeed Insights and address every issue flagged as poor
  2. Write unique title tags for every page
  3. Compress all images and convert them to WebP
  4. Add your target keyword to the H1 and first paragraph of every key page
  5. Create a Google Search Console account and fix every crawl error in the Coverage report
  6. Build at least three internal links to each of your most important service pages

Where to start

The fastest way to understand what your website needs is a proper SEO audit. Run your homepage through Google PageSpeed Insights and Google Search Console. Check your title tags in your SEO plugin. Pick your three most important service pages and assess whether each one clearly targets a single keyword and matches the search intent for that term. That audit alone will give you a prioritised list of improvements that will move your rankings.
